Remember the word "allegory"? Consider the allegorical meaning of "A Worn Path." You were given many words to see the connotative meaning in order to access the allegorical meaning. Think about the use of birds, of the lye that burns the poor boy's throat so that he can't speak or that his grandmother is nearly blind...even her name is related to bird imagery. How about the trees or the path she walks? There are certainly some biblical allusions to Phoenix being like Moses, finding the way and "parting the Res Sea," and she even has an incident with the snake. Welty uses all of this to make a social commentary about the state of African Americans in the South in the 1940s.
